Orton-Gillingham (OG) is a structured, sequential, and multisensory approach to teaching reading and spelling, developed by Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham. It's highly effective for students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties, but beneficial for all learners, by teaching the explicit connections between letters and sounds through sight, hearing, touch, and movement. The approach is phonics-based, direct, and systematic, with lessons building on previous skills in a cumulative and individualized manner to help students decode words independently.
Structured and Sequential: Skills are taught in a logical order, from simple to complex, with new concepts building on previously learned ones.
Multisensory: Students engage multiple senses, including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile elements, to connect language with letters and words.
Explicit and Direct: Instruction clearly explains the rules and patterns of the English language without relying on guessing.
Systematic: Skills are taught in a consistent, planned sequence.
Cumulative: New skills are added to and reviewed with previously taught skills, ensuring mastery.
Phonics-Based: The focus is on the sounds of letters and how they combine to form words.
Direct Instruction of Letter-Sound Relationships: OG directly teaches the sounds that letters and letter combinations make.
Multisensory Techniques: This might include air-writing words with a finger, tracing letters, or moving colored cubes for each sound in a word.
Building Skills Incrementally: Students progress from sounding out individual letters and short words to forming syllables and then longer words and sentences.
Repetition and Review: Material is reviewed regularly to reinforce learning and close gaps in understanding.
Error Correction: Immediate feedback is provided, and instructors reteach skills if a student is confused, ensuring that learning is correct.
While OG is an effective method for all students learning to read and spell, it is particularly beneficial for those with:
Dyslexia
Reading difficulties
Other learning differences, including speech and language deficits
Auditory processing disorders
